Paper Planes

14 01 2009

This post is quite random, but with the new baby and the new semester starting I haven’t had anything profound to write.  So I thought I would write on one of best, most ubiquitous songs of the 2008: “Paper Planes” by MIA.

I first heard this song during the Pineapple Express trailer.  It brilliantly brought all the elements of the trailer together in a slow-motion climax, leaving me with a strong desire to see the movie (whereas before I was uninterested).

Next, one line from the song “No one on the corner has swagger like us” was used as the chorus to one of the biggest hits of the fall ‘Swagger Like Us” by TI feat. Kanye West, Jay-Z, and Lil Wayne.  Again this one clip from the MIA song ties each of the bombastic, braggadocios verses together.

Finally, and what led me to write this post, was the use of the song in the new Danny Boyle directed movie, Slumdog Millionaire.  The song is used in a montage where the brothers grow up and get by while moving from train to train and stealing across India.  I don’t want to sound like a broken record, but the song fits seamlessly into the movie (and into the score of the movie).

Anyways, I love this song, and its a testament to its combination of hip-hop/techno by way of Bollywood, Clash-sampling catchiness that it can be used so successfully in such disparate ways.
